CAAS

CAAS was started in 1979.  It was formed by a group of individuals from through out Alabama who wanted to get together to share their knowledge and interest in raising, caring for, and breeding all types of birds.

The members met the second Sunday of every month at an apartment complex meeting room in Montgomery, AL.  The club later moved to the bank in Prattville, AL and then to public Library in Prattville, AL.  The club currently meets the second Sunday of each month at the Montgomery Zoo Educational Department, Montgomery, AL from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The organization's claim to fame is the bird fair and shows produced each year on Labor Day weekend.  The first bird fair was held at the Holidome in Montgomery, AL.  It was strictly set up for the members to swap and sell their extra birds.  Seminars and sale tables were around the pool at the Holidome. What a great fun filled time was had.  This went on for three years then the club outgrew the area around the pool. Several of the club members became interested in showing birds. The club relocated to larger facilities at a hotel in downtown Montgomery, AL, but it did not feel right.  The club then relocated to the Montgomery Civic Center. There was plenty of space, but still members just didn't feel like this was what they were looking for.  Finally, the members found what was thought as the perfect place, the Governor's House Hotel.  The facilities were perfect for the fair and show. CAAS has continued to have the shows and fairs at the Governor's Hotel for over 11 years.

Although the first fairs were set up to help club members, it is now the club's main fund raising project to finance avian causes and research.  It is one of the top shows and fairs in the United States.

Each year CAAS find ways to better educate the public, increase interest in birds, and to assist aviculturist in all aspects.

Through this club, you will find life long friendships and people who will always assist in the proper care of all types of birds.
