They are most likely to be found from your house roofs or near rooms or places that are a source of food for them or their chicks. Since they are tailored as “flying rats”, people want them out from their house properties and buildings.

There are numerous tips and methods to use now to repel and keep the pigeons away but some of them come with disadvantages such as health problems and time consuming but still, worth a try.

How to Repel Pigeons

We must first check on some things why these pigeons are causing you problems. After we know the causes why they are there, it will be easier for us to keep them away from house properties and such. Without knowing these things, you may move from one problem to another.

Know their life cycle a little bit before doing anything or purchasing anything from pest control stores can help you narrow down the problems they are causing you. Most pigeons do their food hunt in the morning and sleep at night.

If your problem happens to be in the morning, then you could have feeding problems, there may be sources of food around your area that you need to secure or stop. Make sure to close all open lids or put the garbage in the right and sealed place. If their source comes from a person or your neighbor, you may talk to your neighbor about the problem you have to come up with a safer deal. If the feeder can halt his/her actions, then it will eradicate the problem you are having with pigeons about food sources. If not, then you could also make a call to your council to make the most productive step.

If there is no way for you to make your neighbor to refrain from producing these food sources (they could be a company producing grains or corns), you can come up with things you can do or make to repel these pigeons from your property.

Set up spike strips on places where they usually stay during the day and around it. This will give the pigeons an uncomfortable platform to perch on, leading them to look for another place to stay during the day.

You can also set up a fake owl or a fake falcon in the area where they are seen. Since these birds are a big threat to them, they will then tag your place a danger zone and they will definitely move to another place.

Placing shiny things in the area will scare them off as well. Pigeons are distracted by the shining light emitted from these reflectors. Try installing shiny foils and mirrors around the area. You could also use old CD’s or tape reflectors.

If they are used to stay indoor through a small opening in your house (may be a window or a small opening from the attic), then make sure to close the opening windows and cover the opening from your attic where they usually come in. With this, pigeons will stop from entering the property and they will be forced to look for another place where they can perch.

Scare them off with water from your garden hose and shoot at them. They will get distracted and irritated by the volume of water that they will receive thus, giving them the chance to look for a safer place to stay. Do this consecutively until they completely leave the area.

Using a weatherproof sound alarm can also do the job. Install devices that will trigger a sound alarm the moment they get near or perch around the area and they will be forced to move to a more quiet and safe place.

If you are having problems during the night, the cause of this is likely that the pigeons have a roosting place in your house.

Try to identify the location where the pigeons are roosting first and know how many of the pigeons are roosting in the said roosting place before purchasing any pigeon deterrent devices. This will give you the best option to keep the pigeons out from your house safely.

To locate the pigeon roosting, find piles of pigeon guano on the ground. This pile of guano is developed as time goes by since pigeons perch on this very spot overnight. Ones you locate the pile of guano, check how many pigeons are roosting there. The best time to count the quantity of pigeon is right after dark by the time the birds return to their roost.

Once you collected these data, you need to check for possible places where the pigeons may relocate. They will likely move to a safer place close to their previous roost right after the application of the deterrents. Consider the location under your roof as a possible place where they will transfer to. Set up spikes and be sure to close all possible entries for their transfer. However, if you found that you are dealing with large quantities of these pigeons, the best option is to call a professional pest controller to have the job done. A big quantity of pigeon can be very tedious for you to do. It is best to inform your neighbors about this major job for them to be aware and to reduce more problems.

Throwing their roosting place will also lead them to look for another place to roost. This can only be applicable if you are facing small quantity of these flying rats. But if you are to throw a nesting place, be sure to sought permission from the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) before doing so as it is an offence to intrude with a nest or its contents.
